Tepper School’s Titan of Theory: Linda Argote Named 2024 AAAS Fellow

Linda Argote, Thomas Lord Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory at the Tepper School, has been honored as a 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow for her influential work in organizational learning.

Argote is an internationally recognized expert in organizational learning significantly advancing research and practice on group and organizational learning, memory and knowledge transfer, and the spread of lessons learned in one organizational unit to another. Her scholarly articles have been recognized among the “most influential” published in Management Science and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes publications.

Argote was recognized with the Joseph E. McGrath Lifetime Achievement award for the study of groups by the International Network for Group Research (INGRoup); she developed a popular elective on organizational learning at the Tepper School that is a vehicle for moving research findings into the classroom; and her current research investigates the role of transactive memory systems in improving the performance of hospital trauma resuscitation teams.

Tepper School Faculty Discuss the AI and Future of Work on CMU Podcast

Two Tepper School of Business faculty members shared their subject matter expertise in “Clocking In: AI Transforms the Future of Work,” an episode of Carnegie Mellon University’s Where What If Becomes What’s Next podcast.

Professor of Economics Laurence Ales and R. Ravi, the Andris A. Zoltners Professor of Business and Professor of Operations Research and Computer Science discussed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it is poised to transform the workplace.

“It’s going to have a profound influence on sectors of business where information is the workhorse, Ravi said. “And by this, I mean media, news, and various forms of entertainment and technologies where information is the product.”

New Leadership Joins the Tepper School

The Tepper School has new leadership in several key roles:

Toni Mooney Smith is the new chief marketing and communications officer. Toni brings over 20 years of executive leadership in academia and healthcare, with expertise in strategic communications and brand strategy.

Kristin Risi is the inaugural assistant dean of Executive Education. With nearly 25 years of experience at Drexel University, most recently as the associate dean of corporate, Executive Education, and innovation, Kris brings invaluable expertise to the Executive Education offerings.

In the summer of 2024, several faculty members rose to leadership positions in the Tepper School. Laurence Ales was named senior associate dean of education and Oliver Hahl became associate dean of undergraduate programs. Laurie Weingart was named interim associate dean of master's programs. Param Vir Singh became the associate dean of research effective. Their leadership will continue to shape the Tepper School's academic programs and community.

Sunkee Lee P&Q 2024 Best 40-Under-40 MBA Professors mention

Professor Sunkee Lee’s exemplary performance in the classroom has left a lasting impact on his students, notably earning him the George Leland Bach Teaching Award for Excellence in the MBA Classroom during his first year teaching MBA students at the Tepper School.

Lee, the Frank A. and Helen E. Risch Associate Professor of Organizational Theory and Strategy, is renowned for his research on individual and organizational learning, and his work has been published in top management journals and cited by major global media outlets. His innovative teaching approach and dedication to student engagement and learning have made him a distinguished faculty member at the Tepper School since 2017 and a Poets&Quants 40-Under-40 Best MBA Professor of 2024.

Diane Rulke’s Literary Lens on Women’s Lives Wins Athena40 Accolades

Diane Wei Liang Rulke, distinguished service professor of organizational behavior and theory at the Tepper School, along with several other shortlisted nominees were recognized during Athena40’s Women's Interventions for a Sustainable Future awards ceremony. Athena40 – a platform for visionary leadership – is the leading think tank for visionary leadership in diversity and innovation, headquartered in London, UK.

When Rulke was first contacted by Athena40, she didn't think it was real. She has published multiple books about the lives of women who embark on journeys that challenge social norms. "As an author, broadcaster, and keynote speaker, I often spoke about women's aspirations and the challenges they face in their cultures," she said. "It is quite rewarding and humbling to think that perhaps I have made a difference in raising the awareness of their amazing strength and contributions."

Carnegie Mellon Scholars Lead the Way in AI Fairness with Award-Winning Research

Tepper School Professors John Hooker (Emeritus) and Associate Teaching Professor Derek Leben along with CMU Ph.D. alumna Violet (Xinying) Chen were awarded Best Paper at the prestigious CPAIOR conference for their work on group fairness in social welfare optimization. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon and Stevens Institute of Technology introduced a novel approach to AI fairness, drawing on the well-established tradition of social welfare optimization. This approach emphasizes overall benefits and harms to individuals, aiming for fairer AI decisions.

Their paper highlights "alpha fairness," a method balancing fairness and efficiency, essential for evaluating AI's industry-standard assessment tools that analyze approval rates across protected groups. Their work underscores the significance of social justice in AI, aiming to ensure technology promotes equity for all societal groups.
